HISTORY OF BPC

The history of BPC is deeply rooted both in the community of Brookland and in the tradition of providing caring and competent help. In 1985 the Congregation of Marians of the Immaculate Conception opened the Marian Home of Prayer in the Brookland neighborhood. The Marian Home offered therapy, spiritual direction, ACOA support groups, workshops, retreats, and healing courses.

In May 1992 the Marian Home closed, but the staff remained committed to offering counseling, spiritual direction, therapy groups, and various workshops. Consequently, a group of the therapists and spiritual directors created a nonprofit called the Brookland Pastoral Center. This new Center initially rented space from Theological College, a part of Catholic University.

In October 1993, Brookland Pastoral Center moved to its present location at 1325 Quincy Street, NE. The location fits BPC because it offers a sense of peace, rest, and safety to all who come.

In 1999 in response to the changing realities of mental health, Brookland Pastoral Center shifted its legal status from a nonprofit to a limited liability partnership. This change clarifies that each therapist is in individual private practice and is responsible for the care of his/her own clients. Brookland Pastoral Center provides a meeting place for the individual therapists, and they continue to offer the same quality services as always.

Today, we at Brookland Pastoral Center are still committed to the caring and competent care in the Brookland neighborhood that was originally offered in 1985 by the founding group from which we have developed.
